This image is based on one of the sketches I did when I was in the Colorado high country...It looks like doing some planning before I do the drawing may be worth while...
planning is always necessary XD especially for larger works. the more you know about what the finished piece should look like helps, composition, color scheme, narration, lighting on the form, perspective, etc etc.

Thank you... I agree that with larger more detailed work, planning is very helpful and actually seems to be quicker than the "follow where the notion leads", method I normally use...but...I have always had trouble staying inside of the lines... ...sigh...but to do something of real quality I guess I can use the lines as a starting point...
sketches don't have to be perfect... i add quite a bit between pencils and final ink, i let the details emerge in that process.
maybe work out a rough sketch of the composition and general idea of light/shadow areas and work off of that. you don't have to 'stay inside the lines' but having a good idea of what you want will help.
also sketching will help you turn your heads away from the profile as you deal with the weight of gaze in your compositions and work less off the fly.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
